Jiessel is 13 years old and in the 7th grade. She lives with her parents and 3 siblings. Her father works as a farmer to provide for their family. She hopes to become a policewoman someday to serve her country, help people in times of trouble, and help provide for her family. Jiessel lives in the area of Kabasalan on the island of Mindanao in the southern part of the Philippines. This region struggles greatly with extreme poverty. The burden this extreme poverty puts a family is simply overwhelming, consequently many of the children are forced to work and help financially support the family as a child laborer. This is just one tragic outcome as the children here are also highly susceptible to child trafficking, gang enslavement and starvation.
