Mary Ann is 12 years old and in the 5th grade. She live with her grandparents who both work as rubber tappers. She hopes to become a successful police officer someday. Mary Ann lives in the area of Kabasalan on the island of Mindanao in the southern part of the Philippines. This region struggles greatly with extreme poverty. The burden this extreme poverty puts a family is simply overwhelming, consequently many of the children are forced to work and help financially support the family as a child laborer. This is just one tragic outcome as the children here are also highly susceptible to child trafficking, gang enslavement and starvation.
