Mary Jane is 12 years old and in the 6th grade. She is the 7th of 9 children and only her and 3 of her siblings are able to attend school. Her father is a farmer and her mother is a housewife. She hopes to finish her studies and become a fireman someday. Mary Jane lives in the area of Kabasalan on the island of Mindanao in the southern part of the Philippines. This region struggles greatly with extreme poverty. The burden this extreme poverty puts a family is simply overwhelming, consequently many of the children are forced to work and help financially support the family as a child laborer. This is just one tragic outcome as the children here are also highly susceptible to child trafficking, gang enslavement and starvation.
