Piona is 9 years old and the youngest in her family. Her father works as a carpenter to provide for their family. They currently do not have their own home and are living with relatives. She hopes to finish her studies and become a teacher someday. Piona lives in the area of Kabasalan on the island of Mindanao in the southern part of the Philippines. This region struggles greatly with extreme poverty. The burden this extreme poverty puts a family is simply overwhelming, consequently many of the children are forced to work and help financially support the family as a child laborer. This is just one tragic outcome as the children here are also highly susceptible to child trafficking, gang enslavement and starvation.
