Maureen Joyce is 11 years old and in the 6th grade. She lives with her father and two siblings. Her mother is working overseas to provide for the family. Her dream is to finish her studies and become a teacher someday. Maureen Joyce lives in the area of Kabasalan on the island of Mindanao in the southern part of the Philippines. This region struggles greatly with extreme poverty. The burden this extreme poverty puts a family is simply overwhelming, consequently many of the children are forced to work and help financially support the family as a child laborer. This is just one tragic outcome as the children here are also highly susceptible to child trafficking, gang enslavement and starvation.
